The Winchester House in California: 'Haunted' Winchester Mystery House

Out of great fortune and misfortune, grew the Winchester House in San Jose, California. For all of its grandeur, there is nothing of happiness within its walls.

The story of the house cannot be separated from that of its builder, Sarah Pardee, born to a wealthy family in Connecticut, who in 1862 married William Winchester, heir to the manufacturer of the Winchester Repeating Rifle, which had enjoyed immense commercial success and amassed a huge fortune.
