Known in the corporate ski rhyming slang as 'la Belle',
Valmorel is located in the shadow of its bigger and higher Tarentaise
competitors, and skiers rush past on the way to La Plagne and Val d'lsere. But
when you have children with you, then this spot is safe, relaxing and
child-friendly for your ski holiday.
Established in 1976 in captivating chalet style, the
low-rise ski resort comprises mainly of apartment 'hamlets' having a central
area, Bourg Morel, where the restrained off-slope action takes place. The whole
area goes along nicely with its natural environment and is geared towards the
family market, from its traffic-free main street to the kindergarten and creche
facilities in the center of the resort, which are second to none.
Valmorel shares its 'Grand Domaine' lift pass with St
Frangois-Longchamp and Doucy-Combelouviere, and was the very first ski area to
link the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys. With a max height of just 2,550m and
a lot of runs are below 2,000m, good snow is not a sure thing, but heavy
investment in snowmaking means that most of the home runs are covered. The
low-lying pistes stretch for an impressive 150km through the different sectors
and though the area is often as easygoing as its clientele, there are some
steeper runs to satisfy more adventurous mums and dads.
Ski beginners both young and old have some great roped-off
nursery slopes in the village itself and once they've overcome the snow plough,
they may tackle a few long blues from
the top of the two main village lifts - the Pierrafort gondola and Altispace
chair. The latter also brings skiers up toward the ridge, where in a network of
lifts and easy pistes go through the Col de la Madeleine to the not so
attractive outpost of St Frangois-Longchamp.
Valmorel's most rugged skiing, and its quite reliable snow,
rests opposite direction on the north-facing slopes of the Col du Mottet on top
of the Pierrafort gondola, and the adjacent Col du Gollet, while experts might
rapidly run through Valmorel's on-piste challenges. Fortunately, the resort's
family-friendly tag means that there must also be plenty of untracked
powder.
